White Settlement ISD offers a pre-school day care program, First Class Learning Center, that serves employees’ and students’ children ages six weeks to five years old, provides after-school care for employees children who attend Liberty ES, and some of the district’s pre-school children with disabilities (PPCD).
Implemented in August 1999, the program was designed to: provide more inclusive options for the pre-schoolers with disabilities, offer a benefit to staff members that would enable the district to attract and retain quality employees, and enable the district’s teen parents to graduate from high school.
Located at Liberty Elementary, the program currently serves 145 children.
First Class Learning Center provides a quality developmentally appropriate curriculum that is designed to meet the educational needs of children in many age groups. The day care employs 26 teaching assistants who implement planned activities and provide direct services. A special education teacher implements the individual education plan goals of the PPCD children in an inclusive setting with their non-disabled peers. The director of early education services oversees the operation of the learning center and its curriculum.
Because First Class is located on a school campus, the pre-schoolers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of campus activities with the older students. This also enables the children to use the library, computers, gymnasium, lunchroom, art room, and much more. A school nurse is available to address the health needs of the children, administer medication and supervise their medical records and treatment plans.
Related services are available by a speech/language pathologist, an adaptive physical education teacher and a physical/occupational therapist on an as needed basis.
Also, the learning center serves as a lab site for students enrolled in Brewer High School’s child development classes and other related courses. Students are able to observe the developmental skills and growth of children as well as interact with them on a regular basis.
